Romelo Trimble
PG, 6-2, 175
Bishop O’Connell (MD)

Committed to Maryland

McDonald’s All-American Recap: Trimble shot the ball well from 3-point range, and also got into the lane a few times where he tried to finish with floaters. He is a good shooter, but his game is limited right now. Without elite athleticism or quickness to rely on, Trimble needs to hone his point guard skills to make the transition in college. Right now he takes ill-advised shots and freezes out teammates.

McDonald’s All-American Preview:

Trimble is a crafty point guard who can make shots off the dribble. If you leave him open or give him an inch of space, he’ll make you pay.

But at 6-2 and without much athleticism, he’s too small to play SG and will have to play the point. He still learning. Right now, Trimble often has tunnel vision, dribbling for entire possessions in pursuit of a 20-foot jump shot. He has a propensity to jack up shots early in possessions, in turn freezing out his teammates. At the HoopHall Classic in January, I saw him score 26 points, but it was on 7-22 shooting and he finished with 7 turnovers to 0 assists.

The next step for Trimble is learning how to facilitate and hone his point guard skills to make his teammates better. He’s a proven scorer, but getting others involved will not only create an offensive flow, but also take the pressure off himself. It seems like Trimble thinks he has to score 30 points for his team to win. Talented offensively, but still learning how to play the point. Him and Dion Wiley will be a dynamic backcourt at Maryland in due time.

HoopHall Classic 2014 (Springfield, MA): Trimble scored 26 points vs. Ranier, but shot 7-22 and finished with 7 turnovers to 0 assists. He has a strong build and a reliable jumper, but as a 6-2 point guard, he will have to distribute the ball more efficiently.

Observation 12: Romelo Trimble’s upside is much higher than I realized

Trimble can handle the ball vs. pressure, facilitate off the dribble, and shoot from deep. And he has good size. He’s developed into a legitimate point guard, and along with Dion Wiley, he should be given the keys to Maryland’s offense. His catch-and-shoot three pointer is particularly impressive, and if he can become a better distributor, Trimble can be an All-League player in the ACC.
